NEW YORK (AP) - Twelve classrooms in New York City public schools will reopen after being closed for lead abatement, education officials said.
City Department of Education officials told the New York Post that the classrooms were closed Friday after a prior audit had incorrectly listed them as not having lead-based paint.
The students were relocated to other rooms in their buildings and protective coats of paint were applied to the tainted areas.
“The safety of our students is our top priority, and we are conducting a thorough investigation to ensure an unacceptable error does not happen again,” Department of Education spokeswoman Miranda Barbot said.
She said she the affected classrooms should reopen Monday.
Three of the buildings were in Brooklyn, two in Queens and one each in Manhattan and the Bronx.
