ASHBURN — As the presumed new coach of the Washington Redskins, Ron Rivera will get a shot to face his old team right away.
The Carolina Panthers will be on the Redskins’ schedule in 2020, setting up an old-fashioned revenge game for Rivera against the team that he coached for most of the last nine years.
That promises to be one of a few juicy games on the docket next year. The Redskins also will host the Cincinnati Bengals in a matchup of the No. 1 and No. 2 picks in April’s NFL draft. Going by late December mock drafts, it should be Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow facing Washington pass-rush specialist Chase Young for Washington.
The 2020 schedule won’t be released until April, but the formulaic rotation of teams’ opponents reveals what teams Washington will face next year.
The Redskins and the rest of the NFC East are scheduled to play the NFC West and AFC North. The Bengals will come to FedEx Field for a regular season game for the first time since 2012 — as will the Ravens, giving the Redskins their first taste of Lamar Jackson.
Each team’s final two opponents are determined by how they finish in their respective divisions. Washington finished last in the NFC East, so it will draw the fourth-place teams from the NFC North and the NFC South — the Detroit Lions and the Panthers.
The Redskins’ road games include West Coast trips to San Francisco and Arizona, as well as lower-mileage visits to Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
