Mainers are ringing in the new year in unique ways.
In Kennebunk, they’re going to drop a giant blueberry at midnight. In Eastport, they’re dropping a giant sardine and, in a nod to their Canadian neighbors, a giant maple leaf.
In Bangor, they’re getting the new year started by dropping a beach ball covered with lights from the roof of a pub.
Mainers are also getting wet - and cold - by leaping into the ocean.
The Natural Resources Council of Maine helding its Polar Dip and Dash at Portland’s East End Beach on Tuesday.
The larger Lobster Dip is held on New Year’s Day at Old Orchard Beach. That event benefits Maine Special Olympics.
