Larry Hess, head trainer, fired by Redskins

ASHBURN — The Washington Redskins fired Larry Hess, their head trainer of 17 years, NBC Sports Washington reported.

The move comes amid a series of staff changes at Redskins Park and could signal an earnest attempt to court estranged tackle Trent Williams back to the team.

Williams held out much of the season, citing frustration with how the Redskins’ medical staff handled a growth discovered on his scalp that turned out to be a rare form of cancer. Williams eventually reported and claimed he planned to play again, but the team moved him to the non-football injury list.

Williams never specifically named Hess on the few occasions he spoke to the media about his displeasure — but he did take issue with team president Bruce Allen, who was also fired Monday.

The Redskins have been one of the most injury-plagued teams in the NFL over the past few seasons, with 23 players on injured reserve at the end of the 2019 season. Twenty-six players spent some time on IR in 2018 and 23 did so in 2017.

In 2016, hundreds of NFL players’ medical records were stolen from a car Hess rented in Indianapolis.

At least one Redskins player appeared to be happy with Hess’ ousting. Cornerback Quinton Dunbar responded to the news with a sarcastic tweet:
