YORK, Neb. (AP) - A man who authorities say has served six prison sentences in four states has been given 10-16 years for more crimes in Nebraska.
The York News-Times reported that Lawrence Garner, of Friend, was sentenced Monday. He’d pleaded no contest to criminal possession of financial transaction devices, assault of an officer, obstructing a peace officer and resisting arrest. Prosecutors dropped some other charges in return for Garner’s pleas.
Garner was arrested in June by officers sent to check a report of a man trying to pass fraudulent checks at a York business. He fled when they arrived and was taken into custody after resisting arrest, officers said.
In court Monday, Garner told Judge James Stecker that he wanted to apologize to the officers.
“What I did was inexcusable,” Garner said.
“It is true he has a long criminal history,” said Garner’s attorney, David Michel. “He needs treatment.”
Stecker told Garner that he couldn’t ignore that Garner had served so many prison sentences for so many crimes.
“Incarceration is necessary to protect the public,” Stecker said.
