ATLANTA (AP) - The driver of an all-terrain vehicle was attempting to go around a car when he collided head-on with a fire engine and died, according to police and fire officials.
The crash happened Wednesday evening in Atlanta, news outlets reported. The fire engine had its lights and sirens activated at the time of the collision, and firefighters were headed to a call, police said.
The ATV driver was traveling east and tried to pass a car, police said. The fire engine was traveling west.
Police say the ATV driver was not alert, conscious or breathing after the crash. The firefighters involved in the collision attempted to revive the man, police said. He wasn’t wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.
“No physical harm to any of our firefighters,” Atlanta Fire Battalion Chief Dwayne Johnson said, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Emotionally, we’re going to bring a team out and make that assessment.”
The ATV driver’s identity hasn’t been released.
