LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky House Majority Floor Leader John Carney is in an intensive care unit battling what his family says was a sudden sickness.

Carney is being treated for a severe case of pancreatitis and infection at Norton Hospital in Louisville, according to a family statement posted by Mark Carney on Facebook. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas.

Carney got sick while eating lunch on Sunday, the statement says. He was taken to the emergency room early Monday. He had two surgeries later that day and has been in the ICU since then, according to family.

The lawmaker has started dialysis, could have feeding tubes for weeks and drain tubes for months, the post states.

Carney is a Republican from Taylor County and has served in the Kentucky House of Representatives since 2009, news outlets reported.
