PHOENIX (AP) - A man was killed Thursday in Phoenix when the SUV he was driving collided with a commercial truck and ended up underneath the big rig’s trailer with its top sheared off, police said.

The SUV was northbound on 27th Avenue just north of Interstate 10 around 6:15 a.m. when the accident occurred, Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

The smaller vehicle struck the big rig, which was leaving a parking lot on the east side of the road to head south on 27. The SUV’s 32-year-old driver, Jairo Quinonez, was killed.

Police did not identify the 45-year-old man who was driving the truck. He was not injured in the accident and remained at the scene.

Officers evaluated the truck driver and determined he was not impaired while driving, Thompson said.

He said they believe speed may have been a factor in the collision, but he did not elaborate.
