MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - UnitedHealthcare is backing off plans to drop Alabama hospitals from its coverage for Mississippi Medicaid patients.
WKRG-TV reports the decision comes just days before the largest Medicaid provider in Mississippi planned to remove Alabama hospitals from its coverage plans. The change was supposed to go into effect Jan. 1.
The administrator for the University of South Alabama’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, Chris Jett, says he is glad UnitedHealthcare reconsidered the move.
UnitedHealthcare notified health care providers about the planned change this fall. It meant residents of southern Mississippi who normally go to Mobile for doctor visits might have had to go elsewhere.
While there are three Medicaid providers in Mississippi, United covers the largest number of people.
