MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A group of people who want to form a new city in suburban Atlanta are delaying their effort.

Supporters of a city of East Cobb say they won’t seek a lawmaker to sponsor a bill for a referendum creating the city during the 2020 session of the General Assembly. They had been hoping for a November 2020 referendum.

Pro-cityhood spokesman David Birdwell says supporters will resume efforts to seek legislation in 2021.

Republicans have generally supported the incorporation of a number of new suburban cities around Atlanta in recent years, but members of the party told The Marietta Daily Journal in recent days that they wouldn’t support any plan until details were finalized. Supporters have altered plans for the boundaries of the proposed Cobb County city, as well as what services it would provide.

State Sen. Kay Kilpatrick, a Republican who represents the area, says more opponents than supporters have contacted her. She also dislikes the proposed ballot language in a bill by state Rep. Matt Dollar, a Republican from the area. Opponents say they still want Dollar to withdraw his bill. Democrats generally oppose cityhood for additional Atlanta suburbs.
