Fox News host Tucker Carlson compared Democrats voting Wednesday to impeach President Trump with doomed members of the Peoples Temple group who followed infamous cult leader Jim Jones.
The conservative commentator drew parallels between Democrats and former residents of the so-called Jonestown settlement during the latest episode of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” as the House of Representatives voted along party lines to pass two articles of impeachment against the president.
“It is a kind of Jonestown dynamic, where they all know it’s going to end badly, but they’re doing it anyway,” Mr. Carlson said on the show.
More than 900 people died at the Peoples Temple settlement in Guyana in 1978 after Jones instructed them to commit suicide. Children comprised roughly one-third of the casualties.
The articles that passed Wednesday evening made Mr. Trump only the third president in U.S. history to be impeached. A trial has not yet been scheduled in the Senate, where Mr. Trump is expected to be acquitted by its Republican majority.
Mr. Trump held a reelection campaign rally in Michigan as the House voted Wednesday, during which he mentioned Mr. Carlson and several other Fox News personalities who have praised his presidency, including Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham.
“They have said that there is nobody in the world that could have handled that stuff that happened and still created one of the greatest economies and done more than any other president ever before in the first three years,” Mr. Trump said at the rally.
