Another Redskins season is almost in the books. Before they wrap things up next week at Dallas, there’s the Week 16 home finale against the New York Giants. Both teams are 3-11 and just trying to end the year on a high note. Here’s what to watch for.
Opponent: New York Giants (3-11)
Where: FedEx Field, Landover, Maryland
When: Sunday, Dec. 22, 1 p.m.
Television: Fox
Radio: The Team 980, ESPN 630AM
What to watch for:
• Call it the Chase Young Bowl. More than anything, the lasting impact of Sunday’s game could be deciding where college football’s best overall prospect starts his career. The Cincinnati Bengals are on the verge of clinching the No. 1 overall pick, but they’re expected to draft a franchise quarterback. Young, the Ohio State edge rusher and DeMatha Catholic product who some draft experts believe is better than former Buckeyes Joey and Nick Bosa, should go No. 2. The loser falls to 3-12 and gain the inside track for better draft positioning. It could get messy on the field.
• Terry McLaurin and Adrian Peterson both have milestones within their reach: 1,000-yard seasons. The future Hall of Famer running back is still 216 rushing yards away from his ninth season of 1,000 yards, but a 100-yard game Sunday would put him well on his way. It might be a bigger deal for McLaurin, the rookie who has emerged as Washington’s No. 1 receiver even as the team rotated through three quarterbacks this season. McLaurin still needs 167 receiving yards to reach the 1,000 mark. And with two games to do it, it’s not out of the question.
• At the final home game of the year, it’s fair to assess how many fans show up to FedEx Field one last time before the Redskins head into the offseason. Reported attendance hasn’t cracked 70,000 since the Patriots game. It’s ranged from 56,426 fans when the Jets came to town to 63,246 last week for the Eagles. The Giants are a division rival, but the game may be less exciting than even the Jets game. What will the crowd look like as we bid the Redskins’ season adieu?
