PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo says she is discussing plans with Democratic party leaders to establish a field operation to combat President Donald Trump’s advantage in battleground states.
Raimondo discussed her plans for 2020, including the possibility of using her campaign account to support legislative races and advocate for issues like gun control, in an interview with The Boston Globe.
“The president is currently spending hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars already in battleground states on digital, on data, on field (work),” Raimondo said. “It’s unbelievable. He has a clear shot. He is going to spend the next year spending money, pounding Democrats.”
The Democratic governor says she plans to endorse a candidate early next year and help establish a group to organize in battleground states She says her greatest concern is a nominee coming out of the primary wounded with fractured support and facing Trump.
“I know from my own experience, field is totally impactful - it’s what wins races, and it takes time,” she said.
