WAYNE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - A man was in stable condition after he was shot while trying to rob an armored car guard who was leaving a bank with bags of cash, a prosecutor in New Jersey said.

According to the Passaic County prosecutor, the 33-year-old Plainfield resident approached the guard as he was coming out of the Bank of America branch in Wayne Township on Wednesday. A struggled ensued. The guard fired one shot, wounding the suspect.

A second guard remained in the armored vehicle.

The suspect was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson. His name has not been released.

The guards were not injured.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation was ongoing.
