Washington Wizards rookie forward Rui Hachimura will miss at least the next five games after suffering a groin injury in the first half of Monday’s win over the Detroit Pistons.

The Wizards announced that Hachimura will be reevaluated after the team’s upcoming road trip.

The timetable puts Hachimura out until after Christmas. The earliest he could return is Dec. 28 for a home game against the New York Knicks.

The Japanese-born forward was the Wizards’ first-round pick in 2019 out of Gonzaga. He got off to a hot start to his rookie campaign and is currently averaging 13.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Earlier in the day, the Wizards waived guard Chris Chiozza and signed center Anzejs Pasecniks to a two-way contract. Hachimura’s position is at the four rather than a five, but his injury nonetheless could necessitate some action for Pasecniks, a Latvian who was already playing for the G League affiliate Capital City Go-Go.
