CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Former Wyoming Secretary of State Ed Murray has been arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports Laramie County sheriff’s deputies were called to investigate a crash that caused injuries in Cheyenne early Friday morning and found Murray in the driveway of his nearby home standing near a damaged vehicle.

Officers say the 61-year-old was slurring his speech, had poor balance and smelled of alcohol. He repeatedly said there hadn’t been an accident, wouldn’t answer questions and refused to take a sobriety test, according to the arrest report.

A phone number for Murray could not be found Monday evening.

Murray was elected secretary of state in 2014 and resigned in 2018 following two separate allegations of prior sexual misconduct.

A woman alleged in a Facebook post in December 2017 that he assaulted her more than 30 years ago when they worked together at a Cheyenne law firm. The following month, a second woman told the Casper Star-Tribune that Murray forcibly kissed her in 1988.

Both women were 18 at the time the alleged encounters happened.

Murray denied the first allegation and said he could not recall the second alleged incident.
