BOSTON (AP) - The New England First Amendment Coalition is honoring the publisher of The New York Times.
The coalition said Monday that Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger will receive its 2020 Stephen Hamblett First Amendment Award.
Named after the late publisher of The Providence Journal, the Hamblett Award is given annually to someone who has promoted, defended or advocated for the First Amendment throughout their career.
Sulzberger will be honored at the coalition’s annual luncheon on Feb. 7 in Boston.
As publisher since January 2018, Sulzberger is the principal steward of the “editorial independence and ambition of Times journalism,” the coalition said.
The announcement notes that Sulzberger has been vocal about his concerns about the president’s anti-press rhetoric.
Sulzberger said he “implored” President Donald Trump at a private White House meeting last year to reconsider his broad attacks on journalists, calling the rhetoric “not just divisive but increasingly dangerous.”
Sulzberger succeeded his father as publisher.
