ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins placed linebacker Ryan Kerrigan on injured reserve Friday with a calf injury, ending his season.
Kerrigan will now have to wait to beat Washington’s all-time sack record. The 31-year-old was one sack short of tying Dexter Manley’s record of 91 sacks.
“He’s a consummate pro in every respect,” interim coach Bill Callahan said. “I know he didn’t want to finish this season in this fashion, but it’s in the best interest in his health obviously, to go this route right now.”
The Redskins had already ruled out Kerrigan for Sunday’s game against Philadelphia Eagles. The four-time Pro Bowler suffered the injury in the third quarter of Washington’s loss to Green Bay Packers.
With Kerrigan’s season over, the linebacker finished with 5½ sacks and 25 tackles in 12 games. This is the first time Kerrigan has been placed on IR.
Until two weeks ago, Kerrigan had never missed a game in his career. But he suffered a concussion in the Redskins’ win against the Detroit Lions late last month, causing his streak of 139 consecutive games to be snapped.
To fill Kerrigan’s roster spot, the Redskins signed tight end Caleb Wilson off Arizona’s practice squad.
