ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland’s incoming Senate president has formally announced some key leadership changes.

Sen. Bill Ferguson announced the changes in leadership for two Senate committees in a letter Thursday.

Sen. Guy Guzzone, a Howard County Democrat, will be the new chairman of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, which steers state spending. Sen. Will Smith, a Montgomery County Democrat, will chair the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. Ferguson, a Baltimore Democrat, has been nominated by the Senate Democratic Caucus to be the next Senate president.

A formal vote is expected on the first day of the state’s annual legislative session, which begins Jan. 8.

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, who has led the chamber for more than three decades, is stepping down from the post, though he is keeping his seat as one of the Senate’s 47 members.
