LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Coffee drinkers at the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence might need to switch from Kansas City-based Roasterie to Starbucks next summer.
The university said Wednesday the change was prompted by its contract with Pepsi and coffee drinkers’ changing buying patterns, The Lawrence Journal-World reported.
David Mucci, director of university’s Memorial Union, said more people are buying coffee in cans and bottles and Pepsi has all rights to canned and bottled goods on campus.
Since 1994, Pepsi and Starbucks have partnered for Starbucks’ “Ready-To-Drink” business, which sells canned and bottled coffee.
The Pepsi-Starbucks partnership prevents the university from selling Roasterie’s canned and bottled coffees, Mucci said. The university’s 10-year contract with Roasterie ends June 30.
Mucci said the new Starbucks locations on campus would serve only drinks.
The change will not affect the KU Medical Center, which will continue its partnership with the Roasterie.
