CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Defensive tackle Daron Payne and running back Chris Thompson are active for the Washington Redskins on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
Thompson is back on the field for the first time since Week 6 after missing five games with turf toe. For the first time this year, Adrian Peterson, Derrius Guice and Thompson are active for the same game. The Redskins made Peterson a healthy scratch in Week 1, and Derrius Guice suffered a knee injury in that game that forced him to miss much of the year on injured reserve.
In Washington’s first five games to start the year, Thompson was targeted at least five times in the passing game, where he’s generally more active than as a ball-carrier.
Payne missed last week’s game with an ankle injury but returned to practice this week. He and Thompson were both listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report.
And cornerback Josh Norman is again active, as interim coach Bill Callahan said he’d be earlier in the week. Callahan said Norman will back up starting corners Fabian Moreau, Quinton Dunbar and Jimmy Moreland.
On Friday, receiver Paul Richardson Jr. (hamstring) and linebacker Ryan Kerrigan (concussion) were ruled out. Sunday will be the first game Kerrigan misses in his NFL career, snapping a 139-game consecutive starts streak dating back to 2011, his rookie year.
With the Redskins’ top three running backs all playing, Wendell Smallwood is on the list of inactive players. The other inactives are:
- QB Colt McCoy
- Safety Jeremy Reaves
- CB Aaron Colvin
- Center Ross Pierschbacher
