After former Redskins quarterback Sonny Jurgensen announced his retirement from broadcasting prior to Thursday’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, it didn’t take long for people to congratulate the Hall of Famer on a successful career.
Jurgensen was a mainstay on the team’s radio broadcast, beginning his broadcasting career in 1974. He provided color commentary, most notably with Frank Herzog and Sam Huff over the years. Jurgensen, who turns 85 later this month, thanked Redskins fans in a statement.
“I want to thank our Redskin fans for being so generous to me and our teams. We owe it all to you,” Jurgensen said in part. “I’ve had so many wonderful memories of thousands of teammates I’ve played with and talked about during my years in radio and television in Washington, D.C.”
In turn, plenty of Redskins fans and others wrote messages of gratitude:
If you’ve ever listened to the local radio calls for teams other than the #Redskins, then you truly appreciate how good Sonny Jurgensen was to listen to. Always love Sonny, Sam and Frank back in my day. Consummate professionals

Sonny is a living legend, and departs the airwaves of his own choosing, the way it should be.
