ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A Romanian citizen arrested on an international warrant has admitted using skimming devices in upstate New York ATMs to get account information used later to steal money from customers’ accounts.
Gheorghe Cirstea pleaded guilty to federal theft charges this week in Albany. He admitted that he and co-conspirator Ilie Sitariu used skimming devices and pinhole cameras at ATMs in the Capital Region of New York in 2015. They then withdrew $127,000 from the customers’ accounts through ATMs in New York City.
Sitariu was sentenced to 48 months in prison in 2017. Cirstea faces a maximum of five years in prison when he’s sentenced in December.
