WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s education commissioner has issued her preliminary order to take over the Providence Public Schools.

Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green on Thursday sent her 122-page order to Mayor Jorge Elorza, interim Superintendent Frances Gallo, the School Board and the City Council.

The four parties will have 30 days to object to the order at a “show cause” hearing on Sept. 13. Infante-Green said if they do, it would be “very unfortunate.”

The proposal would give Infante-Green control over the budget, facilities and personnel of the district, which was recently described as one of the worst performing school districts in the country by an independent review.

Elorza issued a statement saying he’s on board with the plan. City Council President Sabina Matos says Infante-Green’s actions are “a necessary step.”
