OGDEN, Utah (AP) - A former attorney for a Utah death-row inmate has testified that lawyers for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had asked him to call fewer church members to testify in his client’s 2015 trial.
The Standard-Examiner reports attorney Michael Bouwhuis told an Ogden court Tuesday that lawyers for the church suggested they would seek to quash subpoenas sent to potential witnesses connected to the church.
Douglas Lovell is back in court this week contending he had ineffective legal counsel and that the church meddled in his trial that resulted in his death sentence for a second time.
Lovell was convicted of killing Joyce Yost who went missing in 1985.
An attorney for the church, David Jordan, says the allegations against the church are “baseless and offensive.”
