BALTIMORE — The combination of powerful hitters, porous pitching and summer humidity at Camden Yards is making for more home run records for the New York Yankees.
The Yankees hit a combined 11 homers here Monday and Tuesday, giving them 38 longballs in just nine games at the home of the Orioles in 2019. That is the most homers hit by one team at the home park of an opponent in one season in major league history.
The old record was 29 homers hit in 1957 by the Milwaukee Braves at old Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Six different Yankees hit homers Tuesday in a 9-4 win.
“You kind of have to pick your poison with whom you go after,” Orioles pitcher Tayler Scott said of facing the Yankees. “If they hit a flyball they have a chance to go out here.”
Scott gave up a homer Tuesday to Yankees catcher Austin Romine in the sixth.
Orioles pitcher Branden Kline, who is from Frederick, Maryland, gives props to his foes.
“Obviously, around baseball home runs are up. Give credit to hitters. They’re doing damage on pitches that are left there in the middle of the plate,” he told The Washington Times.
Kline allowed a homer Monday in the sixth inning to Brett Gardner of New York. The Orioles were 38-75 going into the series finale with the Yankees (74-39) on Wednesday.
Baltimore allowed 229 homers in its first 113 games with an ERA of 5.62.
Earlier this year the Yankees hit a homer in a record 31 straight games. They have had four five-homer games against the Orioles this year — a record.
