PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a Portland man on charges of assault and unlawful use of a weapon for allegedly beating a woman with a baton during an altercation at a bar after a May Day rally.
The arrest comes as the city prepares for potentially violent clashes between right-wing groups that will rally in Portland on Aug. 17 and the self-described antifascists who oppose them.
Court records show 45-year-old Ian Alexander Kramer was charged in a secret indictment that was unsealed Wednesday. No attorney is listed for Kramer, who makes a first court appearance Thursday.
The owner of the bar has sued the right-wing group Patriot Prayer for showing up at his bar after May Day protests.
The case is a rallying cry for antifascists ahead of the Aug. 17 protests.
