Washington Redskins quarterback Colt McCoy will be held out of Thursday’s preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns as he continues to recover from a broken leg, according to multiple reports.
McCoy practiced Tuesday, but was pulled from the final stretch of Monday’s practice for precautionary reasons. The 32-year-old broke his leg against the Philadelphia Eagles in December and since then has had three surgeries.
Coach Jay Gruden said at least three quarterbacks will play in Cleveland, though he declined to name a starter. The Redskins have four signal-callers on the roster.
Speaking to reporters July 26, McCoy said he was feeling fine, adding he was still “fighting through some things.”
“You know, sometimes things happen and I don’t really want to get into it too much,” McCoy said, “but I know that I’m at a point right now where I feel good enough to get out there and throw and move around and just everyday working through that and seeing how it feels, and, again, everyone here is real supportive of me and my situation.
“I want to be out there and compete.”

Some context. Three things at play here:
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) August 7, 2019
1) McCoy is still not 100% from his off-season leg surgery. He’s getting close, but he’s not there yet. Another week helps. If this was a regular season game, he’d absolutely play. Not worth the risk for super limited snaps.
I believe @CraigHoffman reported this but yes Colt McCoy will be held out Thursday night. Want to keep making sure about the leg. Was held out for precautionary reasons in full team drill the other day. Held out one practice earlier too.
