WILDWOOD, Fla. (AP) - Officials say one inmate died and several others were injured in a gang fight at a federal prison in Florida.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons said in a statement that longstanding tensions between rival gangs led to “an altercation between multiple inmates” Sunday in a high-security unit of the Federal Correctional Complex-Coleman.
Prison officials say 39-year old Troi Venable died at a hospital. He was serving a 17-year prison sentence for assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Prison spokesman Dale Grafton said no staff members were hurt.
Union leader and guard Joe Rojas tells the Orlando Sentinel the fight was between a primarily African American gang and a white supremacist gang. He says a white inmate stabbed Venable with a homemade knife.
