RICHMOND — Jay Gruden has made a decision about who will start at quarterback for Thursday’s preseason opener in Cleveland. Fans, however, might have to wait another day or two before they find out.
The Redskins coach declined to disclose his choice, saying he first needs to tell his quarterbacks. Gruden said three quarterbacks will play in the game — but didn’t state which three.
Colt McCoy was listed as the first-team quarterback on Washington’s depth chart earlier this week, but Gruden called the order “silly.”
It is also unknown if McCoy will play as he continues to recover from three leg surgeries. McCoy was pulled from Monday’s practice during the last team period for precautionary reasons, but he practiced Tuesday. McCoy was seen walking with a slight limp after Monday’s practice.
Asked if he would be comfortable with playing rookie Dwayne Haskins, Gruden said: “He has to play sometime there, so now’s a good enough time as any.”
“We want to see him in a game,” Gruden said of Haskins. “We’ll see how he does and see how he’s taken what he has done on the practice field and see how it transitions to real game situations, how he handles the huddle, the cadence, the anticipation and accuracy. All that good stuff.”
