MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The first woman to serve as a female patrol officer in Alabama’s capital city has retired.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that Cindy Reynolds has retired at age 65.

Reynolds was one of three women who filed a discrimination lawsuit in 1975, contesting the Montgomery Police Department’s hiring practices.

In January 1976, a judge agreed the department could not discriminate against women seeking employment as patrol officers purely because of their gender, leading to Reynolds being hired.

She spent 20 years with Montgomery police. She later went to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

After 16 years as a patrol deputy, Reynolds moved to the legal services division where she ended her career last week.

She said she decided to retire after learning that her daughter-in-law was expecting a child.
