ATLANTA (AP) - Residents near Fort McPherson say they’re frustrated about what they view as a lack of progress in redeveloping the massive military base.
The Atlanta City Council this month approved spending an additional $1.3 million to help keep the Fort Mac Local Redevelopment Authority going.
One part of the base - the former forces command building - will be the new home for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Atlanta offices, WABE Radio reported.
Board members say they’re still negotiating with developer Stephen Macauley. He had a plan to develop the remaining 144 acres of the site, but the project has stalled.
“As of right now, there have been no changes from our last board meeting to this board meeting. He (Macauley) is still the current developer,” board Chairman Cassius Butts said.
Fort McPherson closed in 2011. In January 2018, Macauley announced plans for a mixed use development on the 140-acre site. Neighbors expressed optimism that something would be done with the property, but now say they’re not seeing any progress.
“I don’t give a rip who’s going to do the developing. If it’s Macauley, fine. Just do something. Don’t sit around and just be posturing,” retired Air Force member Joe Beasley said last month.
At this month’s board meeting of the Redevelopment Authority, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms showed up and talked with board members for an hour behind closed doors. She then quickly left the meeting without answering questions from the press, WABE reported.
