ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - A man accused of recently shooting a woman in Virginia had been convicted of murder decades ago and was prohibited from owning a gun.
NBC Washington reported Thursday that Mumeet Muhammed faces a charge of aggravated malicious wounding and weapons-related counts.
Arlington County Commonwealth’s Attorney Theo Stamos said Muhammad had been convicted of murder in 1991 when he still went by the name of Toni Macklin.
Stamos said that Muhammad is a “prohibited person from legally possessing, purchasing, transporting a firearm.”
Police said Muhammad shot the woman and himself at an office in Arlington County’s Crystal City neighborhood. Both are expected to survive.
Crystal City is across the Potomac River from Washington. Preparations are under way there to absorb a new Amazon headquarters that will bring more than 25,000 jobs.
