CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - Officials in Cambridge, Massachusetts are cancelling the city’s annual Caribbean festival, citing gun violence at a similar festival in Boston this month.
The Cambridge Carnival Committee announced on its website that Sept. 8 festival has been cancelled and that organizers plan other activities this fall to celebrate Caribbean heritage.
The organization says the event, which was in its 27th year, was cancelled following discussions with Cambridge Police Commissioner Branville Bard and City Manager Louis DePasquale.
Two men were arrested last weekend in connection with a gun battle that happened in front of police officers at Boston’s J’ouvert Parade, part of the city’s annual Caribbean Festival.
The Boston Globe reports Cambridge’s parade has also been marred by recent violence. In 2017, two men were shot at the parade.
