RICHMOND — Jay Gruden faced so many questions about Trent Williams’ continued absence Saturday that at one point during his press conference, the Redskins coach turned to a team official next to him to sarcastically ask if the left tackle had arrived at camp yet.
Despite Gruden’s ask, Washington went another practice without its seven-time Pro Bowler in attendance. And as the situation continues to drag out, rumors have started to swirl about whether the Redskins would willing to trade the 31-year-old.
But speaking to reporters, Gruden tried to shut down that idea.
“I would seriously doubt that,” Gruden said. “So, no.”
In June, Williams formally asked the Redskins for a trade, according to multiple reports — only for his request to be denied. After that, Williams asked for a new contract, which was also turned down.
Williams has stayed away from Washington since, as he continues to be disgruntled over how the team handled the diagnosis of a benign tumor on his scalp. Williams has undergone a series of medical procedures related to the issue.
Multiple reports have indicated that Williams no longer trusts the front office and is prepared to sit out the season, if necessary. The Redskins can fine $40,000 per day during camp, as well as withhold a portion of his allotted signing bonus.
Asked if team president Bruce Allen has visited with Williams in-person to address Williams’ concerns, Gruden said: “You’ll have to ask Bruce that, won’t ya?”
Gruden said he remains optimistic that Williams will return, though when asked why, the coach stared down the reporter before saying, “That will be the last Trent question I get today. Thank you very much.”
ESPN reported that if the Redskins decide to trade Williams, it would likely happen in late August — and if the team is convinced he won’t return.
The Redskins have added tackle depth in recent weeks, including veteran Donald Penn — a candidate to start at the position should Williams not return. Washington also has second-year tackle Geron Christian, who has received first-team reps in recent days. Christian is coming off a torn MCL.
If Williams returns, Gruden said he doesn’t know if the left tackle would be healthy enough to practice.
106.7 The Fan reported Williams is in Los Angeles, training to get into shape. Williams’ scalp surgery prevented the tackle from conducting his usual offseason training.
So what will it take for Williams to come back to the Redskins? NFL Network analyst and former Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall said the left tackle would like to see changes made to Washington’s medical staff.
“I do not have an understanding on what it would take to get him back here,” Gruden said. “If I did, he’d be back here.”
