SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A former treasurer for a union local representing teachers employed by the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the Diocese of San Jose, California, has been charged with bank fraud and theft of union assets.
The Department of Justice reported Thursday that a federal grand jury has indicted Kenneth Morris, 50, of Alameda, with eight counts of theft and bank fraud totaling more than $18,000.
Morris pleaded not guilty Thursday and was released on bond pending a Sept. 18 hearing.
According to the indictment, Morris was the treasurer for the American Federation of Teachers Local 2240 when the crimes allegedly occurred last year.
Authorities say he deposited several union-dues checks into his own account and stole some union property, which was not described.
