In an interview with NBC4, Redskins president Bruce Allen said Wednesday he expects left tackle Trent Williams to play football this year — and in a Redskins uniform.
The seven-time Pro Bowler is holding out from the Redskins, and Allen said they are preparing for Week 1 vs. the Eagles without him. But asked how he sees this saga ending, Allen maintained Williams will return.
“I think Trent is going to play football, yes,” Allen said. “We had a surprising retirement this week in the NFL (in Andrew Luck) and I don’t see Trent retiring.”
Allen was then asked if that meant with the Redskins, or if they’ve discussed trading Williams.
“No, it’ll be with us,” Allen said.
It should be noted Allen also said publicly he expected Williams to report to training camp, only for that not to happen. Williams has reportedly told friends he will never play for the Redskins again.
In this latest interview, Allen did not reveal the last time the two talked, but said he does know what Williams wants.
The Redskins open the season Sept. 8 in Philadelphia. If Williams does not return, veteran Donald Penn will start at left tackle.
