KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The University of Tennessee plans to mark its 225th anniversary with events all year long.

The university says the state’s flagship campus started as Blount College in what is now downtown Knoxville on September 10, 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state. The legislature of the Southwest Territory chartered the college.

The school will launch a special year of service for students, faculty, staff and alumni. An ongoing exhibit in the John C. Hodges Library will highlight the university’s history through artifacts preserved in its archives.

The school will also host a birthday party and block party for the school on Sept. 10, a Nov. 1 homecoming parade children can participate in, and a 225 on 2/25 daylong event on Feb. 25.
