TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Rescue crews have found a sports utility vehicle that plunged into Tampa Bay after it was involved in a crash on a bridge that connects Tampa and St. Petersburg.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the SUV was heading south on the Howard Franklin Bridge “in a reckless manner” about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. It hit a pickup truck, the flipped a number of times and rolled into the water.
Television footage showed divers and boaters searching for the SUV.
St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Lt. Steve Lawrence tells the Tampa Bay Times that no occupants were found in the vehicle or seen coming out of the water.
Troopers say the driver of the truck wasn’t injured.
The crash caused a huge rush hour traffic snarl.
