BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - In a reversal, Boulder is once again allowing a company with ties to immigration enforcement to hire off-duty police officers to provide security at its headquarters.
Earlier this month, the city stopped providing the service to ankle monitor maker BI Incorporated, which has been the target of protests because of its contracts with federal immigration authorities. It is owned by GEO Group, which operates the immigration detention center in suburban Denver.
Police spokeswoman Shannon Aulabaugh told the Daily Camera that the city has resumed providing the service because of safety concerns but she declined to elaborate.
Residents called on the city to end any contracts with GEO and CoreCivic or its subsidiaries following Denver’s initial decision to cut ties with the companies. Denver has since signed short-term deals with them.
