OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Omaha police say a man who fired shots at officers trying to arrest him has been found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot.
Police say officers sought to serve a California arrest warrant for kidnapping on 49-year-old Terrance Lovelle Newsome around 3 p.m. Thursday. Police say when officers knocked on an apartment door where Newsome was suspected of being, shots were fired at them from inside the apartment. No officers were injured.
The shooting triggered a standoff and sent two nearby schools into lockdown.
Sometime later, officers entered the apartment and found Newsome with what they said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Newsome was declared dead at the scene.
Omaha police and the Nebraska State Patrol are investigating the shooting and Newsome’s death.
