SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Documents show that a University of Utah police detective who was criticized for mishandling a plea for help from a student who was later killed was fired after she failed to take action on a different girl’s report.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported Friday that Detective Kayla Dallof was fired in March after she was accused of immediately taking action when a 17-year-old girl reported that a university student she was dating had trapped her in his dorm room.
The girl played a voicemail to the detective of the student threatening to kill the teen.
The newspaper obtained Dallof’s termination notice this week.
Dallof’s attorney, Jonathan Thorne, tells The Associated Press that his client strongly disputes the characterization that she didn’t handle the case with the proper urgency. He says she is a “scapegoat” for the university.
