When the Giants took Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick, cameras caught Dwayne Haskins laughing and then shaking his head.
As it turns out, he wasn’t the only quarterback in disbelief over the selection.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield told GQ he “cannot believe” the Giants took Jones, who was just 17-19 as a starter in college. “Blows my mind,” he said.
“Some people overthink it,” Mayfield added. “That’s where people go wrong. They forget you’ve gotta win.”
Mayfield, of course, has partially benefited from the Giants’ questionable decision-making this offseason. New York traded star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns.
Mayfield stuck up for his new teammate last month in an interview with ESPN, taking a shot at Giants fans for consistently not showing up to home games. He also defended Beckham in May, calling Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd a “clown” for criticizing the wide receiver.
Update: After the story hit the national news, Mayfield used an Instagram comment to clarify his opinion, saying his words were taken out of context. Mayfield wrote that he was surprised he was drafted first overall in 2018 and the discussion with GQ then turned to “flaws in evaluating QBs.”
“Reporters and media will do anything to come up with a click bait story,” Mayfield wrote. “Heard nothing but good things and wish nothing but the best for Daniel.”
