The union that represents Los Angeles Police Department officers says prosecutors should seek the death penalty in the killing of an off-duty Los Angeles police officer.
The Los Angeles Police Protective League’s calls for capital punishment Friday came after authorities announced the arrest of three unidentified suspects in connection with the death of Officer Juan Diaz.
Authorities say three people were arrested in Riverside County Friday morning in connection with the death of Diaz, a 24-year-old officer who was gunned down early last Saturday morning when confronted while he, his girlfriend and others were at a taco stand.
Assistant Chief Beatrice Girmala has not specified each suspect’s role in the fatal shooting.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti says three people have been arrested in Riverside County in the killing of an off-duty Los Angeles police officer.
Assistant Police Chief Beatrice Girmala, who is the department’s acting chief currently, says search warrants were served Friday elsewhere as the arrests were taking place.
Girmala says the three suspects are in their 20s but declined to provide additional information ahead of a graduation ceremony for police recruits.
Officer Juan Diaz was gunned down early last Saturday morning when confronted while he, his girlfriend and others were at a taco stand.

A person briefed on the investigation into the killing of an off-duty Los Angeles police officer tells The Associated Press the primary suspect has been arrested along with several other people.
The person was not authorized to speak publicly and confirmed the arrest Friday on condition of anonymity.
Officer Juan Diaz was gunned down early last Saturday morning when confronted while he, his girlfriend and others were at a taco stand.
The Los Angeles Police Department has tweeted that several search warrants were served early Friday in connection with the officer’s killing.
