LOS ANGELES (AP) - A judge has overturned the Los Angeles County sheriff’s controversial rehiring of a deputy and ordered him to surrender his badge and weapon.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff’s ruling Monday is the latest in the legal fight between Sheriff Alex Villanueva and the county’s board of supervisors over the reinstatement of the deputy, Caren Carl Mandoyan, according to The Los Angeles Times.

The supervisors sued Villanueva, who is an elected sheriff, in March. Mandoyan had been fired in 2016 after officials believed he had lied during an investigation into alleged domestic violence. The deputy volunteered on Villanueva’s campaign for sheriff, who later rehired him.

Mandoyan’s lawyer said his client will most likely appeal the ruling, according to KNBC-TV.
