SAN DIEGO (AP) - Authorities say a pilot was unhurt when a single-engine plane crashed on a hillside near San Diego.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the pilot of the Zodiac 601 reported engine failure before crashing Thursday in the Jamul area.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says the pilot was evaluated at the scene and released without injuries. Officials say the pilot was the only person on board.

Photos from the scene show the silver single-seat plane upright on a grassy slope. Gregor says the plane had departed from nearby Gillespie Field airport.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of downtown San Diego.
