DES MOINES, Wash. (AP) - Authorities say a mother and son were found shot to death outside a Des Moines residence in what police are investigating as a murder-suicide.

The Seattle Times reports the shootings may have happened more than 24 hours before the bodies were found Wednesday morning.

Commander Mike Graddon with the Des Moines Police Department says a family acquaintance had come to check on the mother and son and called 911.

Graddon says police found a handgun in the son’s hand.

He says one of the people who died was an elderly woman and that he believed the man was in his 60s.
