DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - A Bettendorf doctor has pleaded guilty to failing to pay nearly $500,000 in employment taxes for employees at businesses he owns.

Federal prosecutors for Iowa say 66-year-old Nirander Kumar, of Bettendorf, pleaded guilty Monday. Investigators say Kumar withheld, but didn’t pay, employment taxes for part of 2014. In all, Kumar admitted to willfully failing to pay about $187,000 in employment taxes withheld from Jai Mata Lakshmi employees, more than $234,000 of withheld from Bettendorf Pediatric employees’ pay, and more than $39,000 withheld from employees of Funky Desi, in Moline, Illinois.

Kumar faces up to five years in prison when he’s sentenced Dec. 19.
