HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal says he’s hoping to pressure the Republican-led Senate to pass election security legislation before the 2020 election.
Appearing Wednesday with Democratic Secretary of the State Denise Merrill of Connecticut, the Democratic senator said the nation is at risk for another cyberattack, calling the Russian interference in the 2016 elections “a dress rehearsal.”
Blumenthal says he’s reaching out to state elections officials around the country, urging them to pressure Senate leadership.
Democrats have proposed several election security bills, only to have them blocked by Republicans who say they are partisan or unnecessary. Blumenthal and Merrill say more needs to be done to protect the elections system, including federal funding for updated election equipment.
Merrill says Connecticut’s system is secure but still relies on nearly 20-year-old technology.
