Quarterback Dak Prescott turned down a contract offer from the Dallas Cowboys that would have paid him an average of $30 million annually.
NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported that Prescott seeks $40 million per year instead. But other reports pushed back on that number, including Pro Football Talk saying Prescott has not asked for that much annually.
Prescott is still on his rookie deal and negotiating a contract at the same time as running back Ezekiel Elliott is holding out from training camp over contract reasons.
The Cowboys also want to pay wide receiver Amari Cooper, whom they traded for midseason in 2018, leaving fans to wonder whether Dallas will be able to afford to keep all three stars on offense.
No one in the NFL makes $40 million a year. For context, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson became the highest-paid NFL player last April when he signed a four-year, $140 million extension. That works out to an average annual value of $35 million.
Wilson also has a Super Bowl title to his name. Now entering his fourth NFL season, Prescott did lead the Cowboys to 13-3 as a rookie in 2016, but he’s 1-2 in the playoffs.
